Lancashire & South Cumbria ICB
UK Integrated Care Board Roll out an Additional 300 Nobi Smart Lamps

The NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) has made significant strides in advancing fall prevention and detection technology within its care homes. Building on the outstanding results from its initial pilot phase, the ICB is now rolling out Phase 2 of the initiative with the addition of 300 more Nobi Smart Lamps, bringing the total number of units to 800.

The power of Nobi Smart Lamps

Nobi’s innovative smart lamps are equipped with advanced fall detection technology. They offer a unique solution that not only enhances safety but also improves the quality of life for seniors in care homes. Through intelligent sensors, the Nobi lamps can detect falls in real-time, instantly notifying staff and triggering prompt responses to assist residents. This feature has proven to be invaluable in reducing fall-related injuries and fatalities, which are a major concern in care settings.

The lamps also offer additional benefits by providing ambient lighting that adapts to the needs of each individual room, reducing the risks associated with low visibility and promoting a calm, comfortable environment for residents. With the incorporation of such technology, care providers are better equipped to safeguard the well-being of their residents while also fostering a culture of proactive care.

Phase One: A Successful Plot

The initial pilot phase of the Nobi Smart Lamp rollout was highly successful, yielding impressive results in preventing falls and improving response times to incidents. The Digital Social Care Team at the ICB saw first hand how the technology positively impacted both staff and residents. The pilot results highlighted the ability of the Nobi Smart Lamps to not only enhance safety but also ease the workload of staff, giving them more time to focus on other aspects of care.

Using funding from the Digitising Social Care’s Digital Transformation Fund, the ICB secured the ability to expand the program and bring the benefits of this cutting-edge technology to more care homes across the region. Following the success of the initial 500 units, Phase 2 represents the next step in scaling up this innovative approach to fall prevention.

The Expansion: 300 Additional Nobi Smart Lamps

In Phase 2, an additional 300 Nobi Smart Lamps will be distributed to care homes, making a total of 800 units now in use. The goal is to continue enhancing the safety and care of vulnerable residents by ensuring that more care homes benefit from this technology.

Over the coming months, 50 care homes in the area will be assessed to identify where the new units can have the greatest impact. Selection criteria will focus on factors such as the level of care required by residents, the average rate of falls in each home, and the readiness of staff to embrace and implement the new technology. This data-driven approach ensures that the deployment of Nobi Smart Lamps is targeted to maximise effectiveness.

The Future of Fall Prevention in Care Homes

The expansion of the Nobi Smart Lamp programme is just the beginning. As more care homes integrate this technology, the hope is that it will become a standard feature of care environments, providing invaluable support for staff and residents alike. By investing in smart technology, the ICB is setting a precedent for the future of elderly care, where technology and compassion work together to improve safety, reduce the risk of falls, and enhance the overall quality of care.

The addition of these 300 lamps will not only help mitigate the risk of falls but also further solidify the role of digital tools in the healthcare sector. As the fall prevention technology continues to prove its value, it is expected that more regions across the UK will take inspiration from Lancashire and South Cumbria, making similar investments to improve the lives of seniors in care settings.

The ongoing success of the Nobi Smart Lamp programme in Lancashire and South Cumbria demonstrates the potential of digital innovation in transforming care for older adults. By leveraging technology to prevent falls and improve care, the NHS Integrated Care Board is not just enhancing the safety of residents, but also fostering a future where senior care is more proactive, efficient, and compassionate. With Phase 2 now underway, there’s much to look forward to as the impact of Nobi Smart Lamps continues to grow, one care home at a time.
